Booking CHEAP International Flights

^^ Difficult to get anything done, with this little girl distracting us! ^^

We just finalized booking all of our trips for this year, and I can’t believe it is really happening! We’re going to Thailand, Japan, Iceland, England, Peru, Canada, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Austria. It’s going to be WILD, especially because we haven’t traveled very far with both Lucy & Greta yet! I feel pretty confident about flying with one child, and even though flying with two may be more of a challenge… I’m ready to BRING, IT, ON. Is it weird that I’m not so concerned about the actual flights with the girls, but all the packing!? We usually fly with Delta, and can pack everything we need (and more) with Brad’s status… But this year we’re experimenting and flying with some different airlines to try the ‘cheaper’ route, so it will be interesting. Especially when we fly to England for a month, and have to fit all of our luggage in two 40 lb bags… ๐Ÿ˜› You win some, and you lose some when traveling on a budget!

There is so much that goes into booking flights, so I thought that I’d share some secrets on making it cost effective. When I went to Norway as teenager I spent $2K on my roundtrip flight, and now I’m smacking myself because we found roundtrip flights to Norway last year for $300… So make sure you explore ALL of your options when booking! We’ve been using websites like Skyscanner, but just be careful when booking with an airline that you’ve never heard of before. Look up some reviews so that you can know what you’re getting yourself into!

We have also been booking our international flights through major international airports that are close by us. Since we live in SLC, we search a lot of our international travel through LAX. Then we find cheap flights to LAX through Allegiant or Alaska. And typically if you book your tickets in the middle of the week, it’s slightly cheaper!? I know it’s weird, but it’s true! If we’re flying to Europe, we also keep our eyes on the ‘low fare’ calendar with Norwegian. We flew with Norwegian last year, and it was so cheap. I thought the experience would be really crappy, but it was actually really great. So I think it’s worth taking risks sometimes. ๐Ÿ™‚

Love Norwegian! There have been people who tell me horror stories, but I’ve flown to Europe with them give times now and the staff are always so lovely. I do recommend ordering a meal if you’re flying during the day rather than an overnight flight. Or pack snacks as they don’t let you order food for awhile.

Thanks for sharing your tips! I’ll definitely add them to my list. Btw we love Norwegian too. We currently live in Ireland, I’m Danish myself and my husband is Swedish and we try to book with them whenever we go home! Whenever cheap and quality meet you just gotta be all over it!

My mom travels to a lot of different countries and just got back from Iceland. She said it was the prettiest place she’s ever been to! She went on one hike that had over 20 waterfalls and there are a lot of natural hot springs you can go to.

My husband and I are flying to Thailand this spring using the “flying out of LAX” suggestion. Brilliant! Can’t wait to see all of your adventures!

I’m so jealous of how cheap it is to fly within the US (& Europe)! It’s so expensive to fly anywhere in Canada! Excited that you guys are coming here though – will you be hanging out in Calgary at all before you hit Banff? I live in Calgary if you want any tips – & you’ll love Banff & the whole park area. It’s incredible!

ps. thanks for the tip about norwegian! We might be flying around the Baltic a bit & were trying to decide on trains vs flights. I love a train travel, but flights sometimes give us more time!

Yes! Major airports often do have cheaper flights! I remember having a $25 flight from Philadelphia to Atlanta (traveling back and forth from school) – be aware of the caveats though, like paying for every single baggage (including carryons!) ๐Ÿ™‚

How many weeks in advance is best to book flights? I’ve heard six but have never been 100 percent sure.

Have you ever flown Air China or China Eastern? We are looking at flights on those airlines and the reviews aren’t great, but the prices are unbeatable!
